About The 2012 Student Advertising Summit

The 2012 Student Advertising Summit

The Student Advertising Summit (SAS) is an annual event that has been active for over a decade. The summit is an all-day event that attracts 100—300 attendees from across the Midwest, including: college students, recent graduates, those in job transitions, freelancers, and professionals.

This event is organized by professional and student volunteers and designed to prepare students for their careers in advertising, marketing, PR or communication related fields. The event puts students in contact with professionals to answer their questions and gain insight about the industry.

For those learning the craft, the Student Advertising Summit offers the best peek "behind the curtain" one could hope for. More key insights and interaction are provided at the summit than in a textbook and most classrooms, could ever provide. Ask questions. Get answers.

For advanced students or professionals in transition, the summit is a smorgasbord of networking opportunity. Get your foot in the door without ever touching an office's handle, shake hands with industry professionals, collect business cards, and show your portfolio.

Ad Fed

The Advertising Federation of Minnesota is a non-profit, professional trade association serving the local advertising community including agencies, advertisers, suppliers and students. Members of our association volunteer their time and talents to plan and execute committee events that are overseen by a board of directors.

In its early form, The Ad Fed (first known as the Minneapolis Publicity Club) was created to promote the business and civic value of the Minneapolis area. 100 years later, Ad Fed is celebrating the Twin Cities' market strength and the global impact we have all made through leading brands, creative advertising campaigns and sound business practices.

Through the years, Ad Fed has consistently gathered influential business leaders to promote Minnesota, protect the integrity of the advertising profession, and enhance the quality and effectiveness of marketing communications in general. Ad Fed initiatives have included the promotion of strong creative across disciplines, programming and awards shows, social gatherings, the fight against unfair advertising and ad tax legislation, public service and community development, education relations, professional development, and much more.

It's not the genius escape plan of four convicts. Our breakout sessions are a few rounds of meet and greets with professionals of different disciplines. This allows you to hand select which professionals you want to sit and chat with. If you've always been a fan of a certain creative, or have a particular agency that makes your heart race, simply check the schedule you'll be provided, and get yourself to the corresponding room. That's what a breakout session is.

9:20am–10:00am Breakout Session 2

  • Miami Ad School

Our graduates leave our programs as digital creatives who move easily among words, still and moving images, sound and silence - breaking the old boundaries of titles and territories. We are the future of the business. In fact, Miami Ad School is an example of how ad agencies could change if they really wanted to and how they'll have to adapt tomorrow.

And we're not one school - we're a network of educational options and cultural experiences in just about every major ad and design capital of the world. So the minute someone steps into a Miami Ad School anywhere, they know they are leaving the world as they knew it. They will have creative teachers from all over the world. They will intern in ad agencies in cities as varied as New York, London, Beijing or Moscow. Students study inside agencies in "greenhouses," allowing them to experience everyday agency life.

Students take classes with our video presence network where half of the class is in San Francisco and the other half is in Madrid. Students don't come to Miami Ad School simply to get a portfolio. They come to get a global perspective from the leading pop culture engineers on the planet.

Prepare

Prepare The 2012 Student Advertising Summit

Consider this your cheat sheet.

Resume.

Make it one page, organized with the most relevant info first. Use quality resume paper and have a professional E-mail address. And no, coffee stains and dog eared corners do not give your resume "character."

Be questionable.

Chances are you'll be asked if you have any questions. Avoid your deer-in-headlights look by having some ready to go.

Study.

Do some research. Log out of Facebook for a while and get to know your favorite agencies. Familiarize yourself with their clients and the caliber of work the company has done in the past.

Dress the part.

Go business casual to assure you look good, but not stuffy. Blazers are nice. Ties are nice. A full three-piece suit is probably too nice. It's advertising and communications, not head of the FBI. Skirts should be no higher than knee level and preferably worn on females.

Double check.

Make sure there are no product chunks in your hair, and separate that uni-brow. That dreaded spinach in the teeth scenario can happen, and it's embarrassing for everyone involved.

Registration

Due to the high popularity of our event this year, registration is closed and walk-ins will not be accepted as we have reached maximum capacity.
